Darren Fletcher defends Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Man Utd signing helping Ralf Rangnick

Manchester United technical director has dismissed what he sees as a "narrative" around the appointment of Red Devils set-piece coach Eric Ramsay.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made the decision to bring in a dedicated coach during his final summer in the Old Trafford dugout.

Poached from Chelsea, Ramsay came with the remit of working one-on-one with individual players, as well as taking ownership of training set-plays.

However, since his arrival, much has been made of United's lack of production from dead balls, only scoring their first goal from a corner during the recent win over Leeds United.

Harry Maguire labelled the stat "embarrassing" having been a part of a team that had failed from almost 140 consecutive attempts.

"It's embarrassing, every time I see that stat I feel embarrassed," he explained after the win at Leeds. "I'm a big part of the set-piece routine and trying to score from corners, but as a team that's been nowhere near good enough.

"If we score more from corners and set plays, we'll be higher in the table."

Solskjaer was a huge advocate of Ramsay, having seen the good work similar coaches had done with the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal.

"We've been fortunate enough to convince Eric Ramsay to come and join the best club in the world and in the country," Solskjaer said of his appointment back in July. "We're excited. He's young, fresh and with new ideas, an innovative coach we know from before."

There has been much scrutiny over the work Ramsay has conducted at Carrington, with some expecting him to be moved on as part of the shake-up following Ralf Rangnick's arrival at Carrington at the end of last year.

But Ramsay remains firmly a part of the plans at Carrington and Fletcher has said that his critics must look at all aspects of the work he is doing with the Red Devils.

Speaking at a recent fans' forum, the former United midfielder said: "People only give the one narrative about scoring from set-pieces.

"The biggest reason Eric was brought in was because we were conceding too many goals from set-pieces. We have really improved our defending from set-pieces and wide free-kicks this season. Eric is a fantastic coach."

During the 2020/21 campaign, the 14 goals they conceded from set-pieces was only beaten by Leeds (15), whilst this term they have conceded just five times.

Rangnick has previously outlined his stance on the importance of set-piece drills on the training pitch, revealing the portion of sessions he dedicates to the area.

In an interview with Coaches' Voice, the German said: "30 per cent of all goals are scored either on or straight after a set-piece, so, as coaches, you need to be alert to that, and as 30 per cent of all goals are scored in this manner, I commit 30 per cent of my training to set-pieces."
