Former Scotland captain Darren Fletcher could be in line for a shock return to Manchester United , according to reports.
The 35-year-old, who made over 200 appearances for the Red Devils, is out of contract at Stoke in the summer.
And now he is being considered for a sensational return to United as part of a new recruitment structure at the club, reports the Telegraph.
Fletcher's name has also been linked with the Scotland job with some pundits claiming he should play a part in the whatever new management team replaces Alex McLeish.
But it is suggested Fletcher could be bound for a return to the club where he came through the ranks and went on to win five Premier League titles.
The Red Devils are set to bring in a sporting director this summer, with Fletcher possibly working alongside Mike Phelan.
It is suggested he would be involved in identifying new talent, while having a major influence on the scouting market.
Fletcher is said to be considering his options at the end of the season, although he has reportedly held talks over a return to his ex-club.
Fletcher joined West Brom from United in 2015 and was immediately made captain by boss Tony Pulis. He spent two years at the Hawthorns before his move to Stoke.
Speaking earlier this month, he highlighted the importance of United making the top four.
“It’s massive for everything to do with the club. It’s massive to do with recruitment in the summer, it’s massive to attract new players and things like that," he said.
"The players want to be playing in the Champions League. That’s where the club belongs."
