Darren Clarke makes passionate plea for people to help after Hurricane Dorian devastates Bahamas

Irish golfer Darren Clarke has made a passionate plea for people to help the relief effort in his adopted home of the Bahamas.

Hurricane Dorian ripped through the Caribbean island earlier this week with at least 20 people reported killed.

The United Nations have said 70,000 people in the Bahamas needed immediate humanitarian relief after the most damaging storm to ever to hit the nation.

Former Open champion Clarke owns a home in Abaco on the island where in its main town Marsh Harbour there is mile upon mile of destruction.

Clarke has his home in the Abaco Club where there is said to be "some damage, but it appears to be manageable, especially compared to many other locations on the island".

And the 51-year-old, who got married to his wife Alison on the island and is a regular visitor, urged people to help the island's relief effort after widespread devastation.

Clarke said on Instagram: "It’s truly hard to understand the total devastation in Abaco. My friends are safe and accounted for but sadly many others are not.

"They need help urgently. Please, if you can, do something to help the people of my adopted home ."

The golfer, who splits his time between the Bahamas and Portrush in Northern Ireland had earlier wrote: "My thoughts are with everyone in the Bahamas affected by hurricane Dorian. Total devastation by Mother Nature.

"I love the Bahamas and watching all those videos yesterday gave me a heavy heart. It is one of the most beautiful places on earth, filled with kind, welcoming people.

"They are resilient and will rebuild but please spare them a thought in these brutal times in their homeland."
