Darren Bent on his Sunderland beach ball goal vs Liverpool and why he's proud of it

Darren Bent admits he is strangely proud of his famous beach ball goal for Sunderland against Liverpool, because he's part of a piece of Premier League history.

October saw the ten-year anniversary that Bent scored the bizarre goal at the Stadium of Light, as the ball struck a beach ball that had made its way on to the pitch from the away end.

The goal was given by referee Mike Jones even though the rules state it should have been disallowed because 'outside agents' on the pitch should cause the game to be stopped while it is removed. It was even more controversial because Sunderland won the game 1-0.

Bent scored 106 Premier League goals in total, but he admitted in last weekend's appearance on Goals On Sunday, that his beach ball goal is the one most remember - and he's okay with that.

He said: "I played against Pepe Reina a few times after and we still laughed about it. It's his reaction. At the time nobody quite knew what to do.

"The referee came up to me at half-time and asked if it hit the beach ball. I said I believed it had and he was panicking then. I think he even got demoted the next week, which was unfortunate because nobody had ever seen anything like that before.

Darren Bent reveals the story behind his move from Sunderland to Aston Villa

"There's one thing Liverpool fans always come up to me and say and it's that they'll never forgive me for that beach ball goal, like I meant to do it!

"I didn't throw it on the pitch and aim for it. It was just one of those things that happened.

"It's just one of those crazy things and it's a strange part of history that is funny, but I'm also quite proud of because I'm part of something that is unique in the Premier League."
