Darren Bent makes a surprising claim about Newcastle United's fortunes if Steve Bruce gets the job

Steve Bruce has been warned there's a chance that Newcastle United could be relegated to the Championship in the new season.

That's the belief of former Sunderland striker Darren Bent who has already admitted he'd 'hate' to see Bruce replace Rafa Benitez.

Bent worked with Bruce at Sunderland between 2009-11 and scored the Black Cats' only goal in the 5-1 derby drubbing at St James' Park .

He has warned Bruce to stay at Sheffield Wednesday but it's expected the ex-Sunderland boss will be named United manager sooner rather than later. And Bent has made a bizarre claim about what Bruce has been told by Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley.

“They lost one of their best players in Ayoze Perez , that’s a big blow, Rondon’s not signed, that’s another key player – it’s tough, it’s a real rebuilding shift,” Bent told Football Insider.

“The only thing I can think of that Newcastle have said to Steve Bruce is; ‘There is a chance we will go down this season. If we do, don’t worry about it, you’re the person to get us back up.’ Maybe they’ve got one eye looking forward.

“You think to yourself Mike Ashley’s best chance to sell the club is right now, their selling point is high as it is ever going to be – right now. If they go down, who is going to buy the club then?”

Newcastle United, under the guidance of Ben Dawson and Neil Redfearn, face Wolves tomorrow morning in their first game of the Premier League Asia Cup.
