Darren Bent delivers his verdict on Sergio Reguilon but has bad news for one Spurs star

Former Tottenham striker Darren Bent thinks Ben Davies will become a back-up after the signing of Sergio Reguilon.

Davies has been a regular for Spurs, joining from Swansea City in 2014 and going on to make 130 league appearances to date.

But his time as Spurs' starting XI may be coming to an end after the signing of Real Madrid full-back Reguilon, who joined for a fee worth around £25million.

That's what former striker Bent believes, telling Football Insider: "You know what, it’s no disrespect to Ben Davies but I kind of look at Ben Davies as backup anyway.

Mourinho: Dele doesn't need to be sacrificed

“I feel like when Danny Rose was there and when he was fully fit and flying, Ben Davies was a backup and an adequate backup because he’ll never let you down.

“As far as being your first-choice left-back, nah, not for me.

"With Reguilon coming in, that is competition and I fully expect, once he’s settled down and into the swing of things, him to become their first-choice left-back.”

Davies still has a long-term contract at Spurs, tied up until 2024, penning a new deal only last summer.

But he now faces the prospect of slipping down the pecking order behind Reguilon, who impressed in Sevilla's Europa League-winning campaign of last during a loan spell.
