Darragh Lenihan out of the picture for Ireland's World Cup clash with Azerbaijan

Darragh Lenihan is out of contention for a place in Stephen Kenny's Ireland squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifier in Azerbaijan.

Blackburn centre-back Lenihan, 27, suffered a groin injury against Hull City last Saturday.

The Dunboyne man, who has two senior caps to his name, is expected to return after the upcoming international break. His last involvement with Ireland was on the bench for the games against Serbia, Luxembourg and Qatar in March.

Ireland travel to Baku in the hope of securing their first win of the qualification campaign against Azerbaijan on Saturday, October 9 before returning to Dublin to take on Qatar in a friendly in the Aviva Stadium three days later.

Lenihan didn't make the last Ireland squad for the qualifiers against Portugal away, Azerbaijan at home and Serbia at home earlier this month.

Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray said: “Darragh went for a scan and when you send any player for a scan they come back with some damage," he said.

"It’s either one week, two weeks, five weeks, let’s wait and see.

“It’ll probably not be Saturday (against Blackpool), but hopefully after the two weeks of the international break it will come at a good time for us to get him back.”
