Darlow, Dubravka, Dummett - Newcastle injury list and possible return dates ahead of Aston Villa clash

Newcastle United began their Premier League campaign with a disappointing home defeat to West Ham.

Steve Bruce's side twice led through goals from Callum Wilson and Jacob Murphy, only to slump to a 4-2 loss after conceding three goals in 13 second-half minutes.

The Magpies must now turn their attention to their first away-day assignment of the season with a trip to Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon.

Dean Smith will be looking for a response from his own side following a surprising defeat at newly-promoted Watford, with consolation strikes from John McGinn and Danny Ings glossing over an otherwise poor display.

Bruce still has a number of players unavailable or doubtful due to injury. Here's a round-up of the latest news.

Elliot Anderson

Injury: Hip

Bruce confirmed the promising attacking midfielder had a hip 'problem' over the summer which did not clear up despite being given time off.

The head coach's pre-match comments ahead of the final pre-season fixture against Norwich City indicated that Anderson like several others was still short of fitness.

Return date: To be confirmed

What Bruce has said: "He’s got a problem with his hip that’s a concern to us. We gave him time off over the summer but, unfortunately, that hasn’t cleared the situation up.

"He’s only a kid, so a lot of it is still (to do with) growing."

Karl Darlow

Injury: Covid-19 recovery

Darlow would likely have started Sunday's opening match against West Ham were it not for a positive Covid-19 test this summer which has derailed the goalkeeper's pre-season preparations.

The 30-year-old was hospitalised by the illness, but has since recovered and returned to training.

Return date: To be confirmed

What Bruce has said: "It’s well documented that he’s been suffering with Covid.

"For any young people out there who are not having this jab, there’s a prime example (of what can happen).

"Karl found himself in hospital for the best part of a week.

"He’s dropped over a stone and a half in weight, and it’s really knocked him around."

Martin Dubravka

Injury: Foot

The Slovakian international underwent surgery in the summer following Euro 2020 after suffering a broken metatarsal.

United's number one also revealed he had been playing through the pain barrier after a previous heel injury, and confirmed in an interview last month that no return date had been set.

Return date: To be confirmed

What Dubravka has said: "Back then they [doctors] predicted a two-month break for me, but I was back after three weeks.

"Now, the procedure may finally be longer than planned but it was important to solve the issue."

Paul Dummett

Injury: Calf

Dummett suffered a calf injury in the pre-season victory at Doncaster Rovers, at which point Bruce stated it would 'touch and go' whether the defender would be available for the start of the season.

The 29-year-old did not feature in the matchday squad on Sunday, and no update has issued on his availability.

Return date: To be confirmed

What Dubravka has said: "Dummy, unfortunately, nicked a calf last week at Doncaster.

"That's a little bit of a concern. We'll see how that is.

"We don't think it's anything untoward.

"We think he'll be touch and go for the start of the season, unfortunately."
