Darkmouth by Shane Hegarty - review

Shane Hegarty, Darkmouth

This is a brilliant book about a boy called Finn and his father Hugo. They call themselves legend hunters and when every so often a portal opens, malicious monsters storm through intent on destroying Darkmouth. Finn and his father must track them down to stop them ruining their town. But, one night, Finn sees someone communicating through the portal. Who is this traitor? Could it really be Mr Glad the fixer who swears he is loyal to the end? Or is it Finn's best friend Emmie's mysterious dad?

Finn would do anything to get his mum back, but is he really ready to follow his dad through one of the portals into a land full of monsters whose greatest wish is to tear him apart! Can he survive a succession of near death experiences, avoid getting drowned and defeat a Minotaur? Or will he fail and plunge to his doom?

I could go on for ages describing the brilliance of this book, it is so full of twists and turns. The writing is witty and sophisticated and the book is also richly illustrated by James de la Rue. The book's only shortcoming is that at times the action can feel a little too fast paced! Well, what are you waiting for? Grab the book and get reading!
