'Dark horses' join race for Irish Times editor

Irish Times
Irish Times ... who will take over from Geraldine Kennedy?

The editorship of the Irish Times is one of the most prestigious and well-paid journalism jobs in Ireland and is up for grabs following the retirement of incumbent Geraldine Kennedy. Monkey hears at least eight internal candidates have gone for the job, including deputy editor Paul O'Neill, news editor Kevin O'Sullivan, online editor Hugh Linehan, property and travel editor Orna Mulcahy and foreign editor Denis Staunton. Business editor John McManus and London editor Mark Hennessy are also believed to be in the frame. Sources indicate the internal field could be even bigger with some "dark horses" applying and some opportunistic applications from some external candidates with little or no experience of Ireland. Whoever could they mean?
