Daring Leeds United decisions have given Gareth Southgate final pieces to England jigsaw

Leeds United fans' last experience of England at a major tournament was much like any other supporter's in 2018.

They cheered a Three Lions squad, punctuated predominantly by players representing the cream of the Premier League crop - it had been sixteen years since England had a Leeds representative at a major competition.

Having finished in the bleakness of the Championship's mid-table cabal under Paul Heckingbottom, nobody could have predicted that in three years' time, Leeds United's mark on Gareth Southgate's England setup would have changed so dramatically.

This summer, Kalvin Phillips and former loan defender Ben White are amongst Southgate's 26-man squad.

The news of White's call-up comes following Trent Alexander-Arnold's withdrawal with a thigh problem, and a solid 90 minutes versus Romania from the Brighton and Hove Albion defender.

It might seem peculiar that Leeds fans are celebrating White's promotion from first reserve to likely starter versus Croatia, as though he is one of their own.

But that misses the point of what Leeds' 2019/20 promotion campaign truly meant.

White was Player of the Season at Elland Road - comfortably one of the best players in the Championship that year.

Most supporters of a Premier League persuasion cast only a cursory glance at the Championship and the divisions below - usually around the time of the play-offs.

What they had missed was the seamless development of two future England regulars.

Phillips' England debut came before his Premier League debut in fact, such was his influence and unique skillset at the base of midfield.

To Southgate's credit, he recognised there was a top flight player in the Championship in Kalvin Phillips.

Likewise, a season in the Premier League and the England boss has finally cottoned on to the fact that White and former EFL alumnus Ben Godfrey will likely be a future international centre-back pairing.

It would have been impossible to suggest that Phillips - still a box-to-box Championship midfielder when England were eliminated from the 2018 World Cup - or White, coming off the back of a League Two loan with Newport County, would be in the next England squad for a major tournament - but they are.

And there's hardly anybody disputing that.

So, what has been the common denominator for a south coast boy from Bournemouth and a born-and-bred Leeds lad beating the odds to represent their country on the biggest stage?

The answer to that would be Marcelo Bielsa.

The Argentine and his team identified Phillips' high-level potential could only be unlocked with a positional tweak.

Bielsa also took a chance on White, who the club had been monitoring prior to the 65-year-old's arrival, selecting him from a group of central defenders to replace the imperious Pontus Jansson, despite not having played a minute of Championship football.

Phillips and White would anchor Bielsa's title hopefuls. The former missed nine games, while the latter was an ever-present.

Now, with fitness concerns for Jordan Henderson and Harry Maguire, it's entirely likely the former Leeds pair will anchor England at a major tournament.

Had it not been for Marcelo Bielsa and Leeds United's vote of confidence in two young players, there is almost a guarantee England would be lining up very differently this coming Sunday.
