Daria spin-off: Tracee Ellis Ross announced as star of new show Jodie

Tracee Ellis Ross will star in and executive produce a Daria spin-off for MTV.

The actor and comedian is set to voice the main character in Jodie, which will be based on the character Jodie Landon from the original show.

Ellis Ross will also serve as executive producer on the animated series, according to Variety.

Daria originally premiered on MTV in 1997 and aired until 2002.

That show itself came as a spin-off of Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head.

MTV announced in June last year that it was working on giving Daria a new instalment. The spin-off’s working title at the time was Daria & Jodie.

“I am thrilled to bring this project to life with MTV, both as executive producer and by voicing Jodie’s character,” Ellis Ross told Variety in a statement.

“Being able to give voice to fresh, feminist and unexplored stories of young women excites me.”

She said the show would feature a “diverse cast” and ”unapologetically smart and ambitious young female characters”.

Jodie will reportedly focus on the workplace and be the first in several planned Daria spin-offs.
