Daredevils spotted dangling feet off 100ft mill where teenager broke his leg after fall

Daredevils have been spotted climbing a 100ft mill and dangling their legs off the edge where a teenager broke his leg after a fall.

Residents have said they watched a group of boys climb around the roof of the derelict Old Lane Mill in Boothtown, Halifax, on Tuesday, August 31

Jessica Grabska told YorkshireLive people have suffered injuries after climbing on the mill before.

She added it was not the first time she has seen children and adults atop the building, saying: "Please do something with that building because somebody will die!"

A 13-year-old boy broke his leg in October 2020 after falling 20 feet from the mill.

West Yorkshire Police have reported previously that children and teenagers often enter the site and climb around or set fires. Police have warned that the building is not safe.

The dilapidated mill is privately owned, making any climbers trespassers.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "Police were called to Old Lane in Halifax at about 6.52pm on Tuesday to a report that two teenagers had been seen on the roof of a disused mill building.

"Officers attended and while no-one was present on the roof of the mill a group of young people seen nearby were spoken with and advised of the very real dangers of entering and playing in derelict buildings."

First built in 1825, the mill has been in a state of disrepair for a number of years.

Old Lane Mill is grade II listed, and listed by Heritage England as 'Heritage at Risk'. Heritage England say it is in slow decay, with no solution agreed for its repair.

Planning permission was granted to develop the site in 2013, but it has since lapsed.
