Netflix has cancelled Daredevilafter three seasons, leaving the cast “heartbroken and surprised”.
The streaming service won’t be bringing its original Marvel series back for a fourth season, confirming in a statement: “Although it’s painful for the fans, we feel it best to close this chapter on a high note”.
Fans may be surprised but it’s the cast who are truly devastated, with many expressing difficulties processing the news despite the cancellation of Iron Fist and Luke Cage.
Rahul Nadeem star Jay Ali wrote: “So Sad to hear the end of @Daredevil. I was so lucky and fortunate to be a part of this amazing show and work with such an amazing cast and crew. An experience I will never forget. Thank you for all the love and support from the fans. You are the best. Until next time.”
Deborah Ann Woll, who plays Karen Page, wrote: “I’m so sad that we won’t be continuing this story. Mostly I’ll miss seeing the friends I’ve made every day. Thank you to every person who contributed to this series over the years.”
She thanked writer Erik Oleson for ensuring the series “out on a high”.
Amy Rutberg (Marci Stahl), described the decision as “a helluva way to go out!” She added: “I will miss Marci terribly but so proud to have played in your world”.
Lead star Charlie Cox is yet to comment on the news.
Currently, the only Marvel properties still alive at Netflix are Jessica Jones and Daredevil spin-off The Punisher.
The cancellation of these shows is due to the launch of Disney+, a new streaming service that will host shows related to the studio’s biggest hits. These include Marvel spin-offs focused on characters Loki and Scarlet Witch as well as The Mandalorian, a Star Wars series created by Jon Favreau.
Set after the fall of the Empire, it'll follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic, recently announced as being played by Game of Thrones star Pedro Pascal.
Episodes will be directed by a multitude of people, including Thor: Ragnarok's Taika Waititi, Jurassic World star Bryce Dallas Howard and Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones).
