Danske Bank Women's Premiership season start date and new format announced

The NI Football League has announced that the rescheduled 2020 Danske Bank Women’s Premiership season will kick-off next month.

The season was originally due to commence in April but was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

But as sport starts to return from lockdown it has now been confirmed the fifth season of the Women's Premiership will start on Wednesday, August 26.

The 2020 season will operate under a shortened schedule, with each of the six competing teams playing each other home and away to determine the winners of the league title.

NI Football League Managing Director Andrew Johnston stated: “We are delighted to support the desire of our women’s clubs in a return to competitive football despite the challenges of Covid-19.

“With the recent return of football, clubs have considered the current protocols and government guidance and are committed to exhausting all avenues to ensure a safe 2020 season can be maintained.

"By working together and with the support of other key stakeholders we are delighted to be planning another exciting campaign.”

Revised Women’s Premiership fixtures will be released this Friday.

In addition, the NI Football League’s commitment to develop women’s football continues with the further confirmation that the Electric Ireland Women’s Academy League will also continue this Autumn.
