Danske Bank warning over 'number spoofing' and what you should do

Danske Bank customers have been warned to be vigilant over 'number spoofing'.

Fraudsters can 'spoof' genuine phone numbers to make it look like genuine companies are calling you .

So bosses at Danske Bank sent out a message to issue guidance to customers after seeing an increase recently.

It stated: "Remember, we will never ask you for your eBanking user ID, passcode or account details. If you want to make sure that you’re really speaking to us, phone the number on the back of your card or contact us using the details on our website."

Chris Wynne, Fraud & Cyber Crime Manager at Danske Bank , added: "Number spoofing is not a new technique, but we’ve seen an increase lately. It’s a common tactic to ‘spoof’ the number of genuine companies, for us, it could be the number on the back of our customers’ debit cards.

"Then the fraudster will attempt to settle any concerns you have by suggesting that you check the number on your caller ID, against the genuine number. We’d recommend you to end any suspicious calls immediately, and be sure they are disconnected by either waiting a few minutes, making the call from another line, or phoning a friend or family member first to make sure the line is clear.

"Then, contact the genuine company using a valid number – which could be found on their website or, like us on the back of your card.

"Remember - no legitimate company, including your bank or even the police, will ever contact you to ask you to disclose personal security details, such as internet banking login details, passwords, security codes or debit or credit cards details in full.

"They’ll also never ask for remote access to your PC or mobile device. You should be wary of anyone who does, and report those kind of calls immediately."
