Danske Bank Premiership big hitters eyeing up summer move for Portadown teenager Ross Larkin

A host of Danske Bank Premiership clubs are eyeing up young Portadown defender Ross Larkin after the 19-year-old rejected a new contract with the Mid Ulster club.

Manager Matthew Tipton was keen to hold onto the promising centre back who scored two goals in 17 league appearances for the Ports last season.

But Larkin, who has represented Northern Ireland at U19 level, has opted against signing a new deal and is destined to depart the Championship outfit at the end of his current contract.

It is understood top-six clubs Linfield and Ballymena United have watched the teenager in recent months, although it remains to be seen if either club makes a formal approach.

While resigned to losing Larkin, Tipton says Portadown are entitled to a compensation payment due to the player’s age and the fact he was offered a new contract by the club.

He said: “Ross is still only 19, so we will be entitled to a compensation payment. It will come down to whichever club comes up with a suitable financial package.

“We made numerous contract offers to Ross, but he sees himself as a Premiership player and while I agree with him on that, I was hoping he would remain at the club.

“That isn’t the case so we move on and it opens up opportunities for other players in that position”

Portadown, who missed out on promotion after losing the pre-playoff to Carrick Rangers , confirmed Larkin’s imminent departure on their Twitter and Facebook accounts.

A statement read: “Portadown football club can confirm that defender Ross Larkin has turned down the club’s final offer of a new contract.

“As a result (he) will leave the club when his current contract expires. We thank Ross for his contribution to the club during his time at Shamrock Park.”
