Danny Wilson details unwanted Rangers departure as MLS defender admits title 'jinx' fear

Colorado Rapids defender Danny Wilson has revealed he didn't want to leave Rangers to start a new life in America.

The defender departed for the MLS in January 2018 despite expecting to sign a new deal at Ibrox.

And the former Hearts and Liverpool man admits he enjoyed the "intensity" of life in Govan and expected to stay when Graeme Murty was left in charge until the end of that season in late 2017.

By January though, things had changed and the defender was on his way across the Atlantic ocean.

He told the Mail on Sunday : "To be honest, I always enjoyed the intensity of Rangers, everything that came with it. Aye, we weren't having a great time but I didn't want to leave.

"The people in charge at the time thought otherwise. I wanted to stay but it wasn't to be.

"My last game for Rangers was a 0-0 draw at Celtic Park just before the winter break. I assumed I would stay there longer term but it wasn't to be.

"Graeme Murty was in temporary charge, he had been given the job until the end of the season. Me and him got on fine. I had been captain for a few games and felt I had his trust.

"So I don't think it was so much him, I think he wanted to keep me.

"One door closes, another opens. It is something that I miss and not.

"In Denver, I can walk into the city centre and nobody will know who I am. I have a great family life too, no question.

"But I do miss the intensity, having to win every single game. Drawing a game feels like the end of the world at Rangers, losing even worse."

Wilson still keeps an eye on goings on at his old club, especially given the current manager is an old colleague.

A highly sought after Rangers academy star, he made a £3m move to Liverpool in 2010 after starring as a 17 year old alongside David Weir in the Champions League.

And he admits he's trying not to get too carried away about the club's title prospects in case he puts the hex on the players.

He said: "I knew Steven as a team-mate, although I wasn't particularly close to him,' says Wilson.

"I don't know him well enough that I would have sent him a text after they beat Celtic but I was a team-mate for a couple of years.

"If I ever bumped into him, I would say hello and tell him he is doing a good job. You're hoping this is the season where they can finally do it and win something.

"I watched the game last week and I just feel Rangers have Celtic's number. I don't want to say it in case I jinx them but they look well placed to at least put up a good challenge this year."
