Danny Welbeck makes surprise admission after winning controversial penalty vs Liverpool

Brighton forward Danny Welbeck has made the surprise admission that he was lucky to win the penalty that secured a draw against Liverpool on Saturday.

The Seagulls fought back in controversial circumstances to claim a 1-1 draw against the Premier League champions.

Diogo Jota broke the deadlock on the hour mark at the Amex Stadium, and Sadio Mane looked to have sealed all three points for the Reds with a late header, but it was ruled out for offside by VAR.

The use of technology was at the centre of the debate again just minutes later when Stuart Attwell awarded a penalty to Brighton after viewing a pitch side monitor when Andy Robertson kicked Welbeck's boot.

Pascal Gross converted the spot kick in the 93rd minute after Neal Maupay had already fired a first half penalty wide.

There looked to be very little in the challenge, and Jurgen Klopp was left seething at full-time.

And Welbeck conceded after the game that he was a little lucky to have earned his side a point.

"It was one of those games where we had to try and stick in until the end," said Welbeck. "We knew we could create some opportunities and exploit their backline.

“We got a soft penalty but it's one we will take. We got the point and we'll move on now to next week.

"In today's game with the VAR, I got there in front and nicked it around him. He kicked me and then the ball, so...The referee went to see it on the screen and made his decision.

"The gaffer said we would rather go down fighting. Going into this game we knew we could cause problems.

"They have so much firepower but we wanted some firepower of our own. We could have gone ahead in the game but these things happen.

"They could have gone further ahead with the VAR and offside rules. There's no benefit of doubt in today's game but it's 1-1 and that's how it's ended."
