Arsenal striker Danny Welbeck has thanked fans and well-wishers and has promised that the "recovery grind starts now" after returning home following surgery on his ankle.
Standard Sport understands that the club are continuing to assess the severity of Welbeck’s injury after confirming the striker had undergone a second operation in four days.
The 27-year-old was carried off midway through the first half of last Thursday’s Europa League draw against Sporting Lisbon.
An x-ray confirmed a serious injury to his right leg and he had initial surgery on Friday.
The club have confirmed Welbeck required a second procedure and are as yet unwilling to suggest when he may return.
Welbeck took to Twitter on Tuesday afternoon to post an update on his condition.
The striker posted a picture of himself on crutches with his right foot in a cast with the accompanying caption: "Back home... Thanks for all the love and support. No doubt I will be back stronger than ever before. Recovery grind starts now".
A club statement had earlier said: “Danny has undergone a second planned operation on his right ankle.
"Both procedures went well, without complications. Danny will now recuperate and start his rehabilitation. It’s too early to say how long it will take.”
The injury casts doubts on the striker’s future at the club as his contract expires at the end of the season. He had been linked to a January move to Crystal Palace or Tottenham before his injury.
