Danny Rose receives racist abuse during England's win over Montenegro

England are set to make a formal complaint to UEFA after full-back Danny Rose was racially abused during the win in Montenegro.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate insists he "definitely heard" vile taunts being aimed to the Tottenham full-back from the home crowd.

Winger Raheem Sterling also appeared to cup his ears towards Montenegro fans after scoring England's fifth goal.

Southgate condemned the abuse as he vowed to stand up for his players after they cruised to a 5-1 Euro 2020 qualifying victory in Podgorica.

He told ITV: "I definitely heard abuse at Danny Rose when he got booked at the end of the game, so there's no doubt in my mind that happened.

"We'll make sure that's reported officially, it's not acceptable.

"I'm not sure yet, I had a quick chat with Danny because I heard what happened there. I've not had a chance to speak with Raheem yet.

"Whatever's happened we'll report. I don't want to speculate yet, but I know what I heard.

"We'll definitely deal with it in the right way, we've got to support our players."

England picked up their second victory of the campaign via Sterling, a Ross Barkley double and strikes from Harry Kane and Michael Keane.

Marko Vesovic had earlier given the home side a brief lead.
