Danny Murphy says Jordan Pickford should join Newcastle if Everton get relegated

Former Fulham and Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy claims Jordan Pickford should join Newcastle if Everton are relegated at the end of the current season. Currently England's number one, Pickford has been warned his place in the World Cup squad for Qatar could be at risk if he stays with the Toffees in the Championship.

Frank Lampard's side were dragged into the bottom three over the course of the weekend but still have a game in hand on Burnley. Pickford came through the academy at Newcastle's arch-rivals Sunderland and has been happy to play the pantomime villain in clashes between his current side and the Magpies.

Of course, plenty have cross the black and white and red and white divide throughout history. With Newcastle expected to bring in a goalkeeper this summer to provide competition for Martin Dubravka, Murphy believes Pickford could be an option if Everton are relegated.

Full transcript of Danny Murphy, Simon Jordan and Jim White on talkSPORT:

Danny Murphy on Pickford if Everton go down: "I think it would be hard for Southgate to pick a number one who is playing in the Championship. Even if he is playing well, over someone who is playing well in the Premier League.

"He could be putting his World Cup place in jeopardy. You have to remember if you have a couple of bad games in the Championship then you definitely can't be chosen.

"You can be forgiven a little bit in the Premier League because of the quality of the opposition you're up against. It would be a huge conundrum for Jordan if Everton were to go down. Part of him would be thinking 'stay and be loyal for a season' but if it's going to put your England place at risk, he'd have to word with Gareth."

Jim White: "Would there be suitors for Jordan if they went down?"

Simon Jordan: "Where? Who?

Danny Murphy: "Newcastle. Straight away, there's one."
