Danny Murphy makes Manchester United Europa League final claim that will annoy Arsenal fans

Former Liverpool star Danny Murphy insists that Manchester United would have sold out the Europa League final after Arsenal and Chelsea played out a fixture with little atmosphere in Baku on Wednesday.

The game in Azerbaijan managed to land an attendance of 51,370 but considering the Olympic Stadium has a capacity of 69,870, Arsenal and Chelsea fans have come in for some criticism as a result.

Murphy has been the latest to take a swipe at Arsenal fans in particular and he claimed that United would have sold out the stadium had they made the final of a competition they won at the end of the 2016/17 campaign.

Arsenal and Chelsea fans didn't have it easy to get to the far outpost of Baku. Flights cost around £900 and Arsenal ended up handing back 2,300 of their 6,000 ticket allocation.

Some in the football community have offered up sympathy for the supporters of the Gunners but not Murphy, who provided his take on talkSPORT.

"The simple fact is that if Liverpool and United were in that final, and you're probably right, Celtic as well, there wouldn't be empty seats in that stadium," Murphy said. "They would get there and they would support their team.

"Now I don't know why some people spend every penny they've got when it doesn't seem logical but Liverpool supporters would have filled that stadium, as I think United would have as well.

"Liverpool and United historically, with their success, have more worldwide support so you could get fans coming in from various countries, but I still think more English Liverpool or United supporters would have gone there more than Chelsea and Arsenal did. It's not an opinion, it's fact."
