Danny Murphy insists Newcastle is 'a better project' than Leicester amid James Maddison links

TalkSPORT pundit Danny Murphy believes Newcastle United have a "better" project than Leicester City, amid reports linking the Foxes midfielder James Maddison with a move to St James' Park.

Newcastle had two bids rejected for Maddison in the summer but The Times claim the Magpies are set to return with a £45 million offer in January.

Although Brendan Rodgers has made his position clear that Maddison is not for sale, Murphy believes a move to Newcastle sounds more appealing than the prospect of staying at the King Power Stadium.

"Even if you take away the trouble Leicester have, even if they were sitting on the same points as Newcastle, you would still think that Newcastle is a better project moving forward," Murphy said on talkSPORT.

"It's inevitable that it's going to snowball. With the funds they've got, with the support they've got, the feel-good factor they've got around the place. It's one of those clubs you look at and think that looks a good place to be.."

Leicester are rooted to the foot of the table after registering just one point from their opening seven games. Despite the Foxes' struggles, Maddison has posted three goals and one assist in six games in the Premier League.

The Magpies are crying out for another creative spark in midfield and Murphy believes Maddison will provide them with exactly what they're missing.

"He's a terrific player," Murphy declared. "He gives them something they haven't got. He is one the most creative players in the Premier League. He makes things happen, he's courageous on the ball, he's got a great eye for a pass.

Murphy added: "He plays freely. He never hides away, he makes mistakes [but] he's happy to make mistakes [when] trying to make things happen."
