Danny Murphy in devilish Steven Gerrard quip as he tells Rangers fans not to fear manager exit

Former Liverpool star Danny Murphy believes only a potential return to Anfield will hold weight with Steven Gerrard in the wake of his Rangers title joy.

It's no secret that the 40-year-old would one day love to return to the club he starred for during his illustrious career but several pundits have suggested the Ibrox boss would also be tempted by a Premier League rival.

Murphy - who was a team-mate of the Kop icon for seven years - is adamant the chance to lead his current club back into the Champions League would be bigger than joining a a side like Arsenal.

Gerrard still has plenty to strive for this season with Rangers still unbeaten in the Premiership and gearing up for a last 16 Europa League clash with Slavia Prague

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: "Going to Arsenal for example, say he got offered the Arsenal job tomorrow, I don't think he would take it.

"He's getting success at a big club, he's learning, everything is going well and then you are going to put yourself in an environment where you've not really got the tools to suceed.

"And therefore your reputation is lessened and your chances of getting the big job at Liverpool becomes less because I think that's the aim.

"As I've said, his work ethic, his desire is there to see for all at Rangers.

"I know him, his desire in management will be to manage Liverpool, it won't be to manage Arsenal.

But the usually stoic Murphy couldn't resist a spot of mischief in response to Simon Jordan as he floated an extremely unlikely next destination for Gerrard.

He added: "Imagine Manchester United have a bad run-in and they come calling.

"He wouldn't do that in a million years, he wouldn't do that."
