Danny Murphy explains why Gary Cahill was a crucial summer signing for Crystal Palace

Match of the Day pundit Danny Murphy has praised the impact of former Chelsea man Gary Cahill at Crystal Palace.

The defender was part of the Eagles team that came from behind to beat West Ham United 2-1 at the London Stadium (yesterday), thanks to goals from Patrick Van Aanholt and Jordan Ayew.

Cahill arrived on a free transfer from Chelsea during the summer, after nine and a half years at Stamford Bridge. He has played the last six league games under Roy Hodgson, with the team losing just once in that run.

Following the game, Murphy heaped praise on the defender.

“It was a super signing, for his experience, his quality, he’s been not playing football for too long for a player of his ability," the former Premier League midfielder said on Match of the day.

"With Sakho and Tomkins, who have been missing for Palace and did so well last season, he’s been crucial.

“He’s good in both boxes, he’s got tidy feet and he’s enjoying it. He’s still got plenty left in him, he’s still quick, he’s still powerful and he was a real influence today.”

The win took Palace up to fourth place in the table with 14 points, having won four of their eight league games.
