Danny Murphy apologises for controversial comments about Liverpool and Man City star Kevin De Bruyne

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has apologised for comments he made about Manchester City’s plans to give the Reds a guard of honour.

Jurgen Klopp’s side go to the Etihad Stadium on Thursday night in the Premier League, having already secured a long-awaited league crown.

It has become tradition in England for home teams to give the title-winning team a guard of honour when they play away from home.

Pep Guardiola has confirmed that Man City will honour the tradition and give their respect to Liverpool before Thursday’s match.

Speaking to talkSPORT on Monday night, Murphy labelled the idea as “a load of nonsense”, and also said some Reds players are not fit to lace Kevin De Bruyne’s boots.

Now Murphy has taken to Instagram to apologise for his remarks about Liverpool, saying he used a “poor choice” of words.

“Yesterday on talkSPORT discussing the concept of the guard of honour I used a poor choice of wording which I apologise for in relation to Liverpool midfield,” wrote Murphy.

“Just to clarify I have nothing but admiration and respect for all the LFC players and their incredible achievements over the last two years.

“I would hate for a misplaced throwaway phrase which wasn’t thought through to imply anything otherwise.

“I of course don’t always get it right when doing live TV and radio but will always hold my hands up and apologise when I don’t.”
