Danny Mills' verdict on Leeds United's Elland Road expansion plans

Danny Mills has suggested that his former club Leeds United are on the right track for a return to the Premier League, and he’s confident they’d sell 50,000 tickets every week if they make it.

The former England right-back, who was back at Elland Road last month as part of the club’s centenary celebrations, was speaking on TalkSport .

Mills, 42, retired from football in 2009 at the age of 32 after suffering with recurring knee injuries. He made over a hundred Premier League appearances for Leeds between 1999 and 2004.

“I’ve set all along, if you finish above Leeds I think you get automatic promotion,” Mills said.

“I can’t see them finishing much further down than third. I think they are one of the best teams in the Championship, I think they play some of the best football, defensively they’ve been absolutely superb.

“They haven’t quite been clinical enough in front of goal, but they’re still there or thereabouts. I think the experience of last season will hopefully drive them on.

“I just hope now that the festive period with a lot of good games, West Brom and Leeds might be able to open a bit of a gap.”

Leeds currently sit third in the table, behind Preston on goal difference and two points off league leaders West Brom. Marcelo Bielsa’s side also boast the best defensive record in the division.

If the Whites do go up, managing director Angus Kinnear has teased the possibility of extending the capacity at Elland Road to 50,000 by massively expanding the West Stand.

“You can’t buy a ticket at Elland Road at the moment,” Mills added.

“It’s sold out every single week. 35, 36,000 plus… season tickets have all gone. It’s tough.

“You imagine if they got to the Premier League, they’re talking about possibly extending the stadium to 50,000. They would sell that out week in week out, no shadow of a doubt.”
