Danny Mills makes Patrick Bamford claim amid Leeds United Rhian Brewster transfer talk

Leeds United would benefit more with striker Patrick Bamford starting games for them rather than Rhian Brewster, according to Danny Mills.

Mills, who had a five-year spell at Leeds between 1999 and 2004, believes the rumoured target would be a risk given his lack of experience.

Brewster is currently on loan at Championship rivals Swansea City from Liverpool and has scored four goals in 11 appearances for the Swans.

Marcelo Bielsa was interested in the 20-year-old in January, according to Phil Hay of the Athletic, and it looks like he may be about to reignite his desire to sign him.

Mills does not believe that Brewster would be an improvement on Bamford, who has scored 13 times in 36 Championship appearances this season, as Leeds sit top in their race for promotion.

“I would only see him as a squad player. He is not ready to lead the line, that is for sure. You need somebody with out-and-out experience of the Premier League,” the former Leeds full-back said to Football Insider.

“You might as well stick with Bamford if you are going to go with Rhian Brewster. Undoubtedly, he has got the talent but he is unproven.

“If you are going to replace somebody you have to have the guarantee that they are better than what you have got.”

Brewster’s future may depend on what Liverpool do in the transfer market as well, with RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner linked with Jurgen Klopp’s side.

As it stands, the Reds have Roberto Firmino and Divock Origi, who are the only natural centre-forwards.

However, Klopp will be keen to get the 20-year-old striker back out on loan at a good level as first-team football is far from certain at the Premier League leaders.
