Danny Ings will not face Newcastle United on Friday night

Southampton star Danny Ings has been ruled out of Friday night's big clash against Southampton.

The England international, who has six goals to his name so far this season, picked up a knee injury in the Saints' 4-3 win at Aston Villa on Sunday.

The initial assessment was that Ings could be fine, but he will now head for surgery and will miss up to a month of action meaning he will not line up against Newcastle United at St Mary's.

Southampton boss Ralph Hassenhuttl said: "The message was what we thought, we must have a look.

"The assessment was not bad and we started running yesterday a little bit, jogging on the pitch.

"The knee was swollen afterwards and he had pain so we immediately stopped.

"So we had another look and decided to go for surgery. That is the safest way to have only a 4-6 week injury.

"It is small surgery, but it is one. I hope it is not getting worse than this."
