Danny Goldman dead: Actor and voiceover artist on The Smurfs dies aged 80

Hollywood actor Danny Goldman has died at the age of 80.

He is best known for voicing the character of Brainy Smurf in popular cartoon series The Smurfs.

Goldman's death comes just months after he suffered two strokes, his agent Doug Ely told TMZ.

Ely also paid tribute on Facebook calling his client and friend of 40 years 'one of a kind.'

In a statement he said: "He always had strong opinions and didn't mind telling you about them. He was incredibly funny. He loved to root for the little guy and help wherever he could. He had a huge heart. We lost a good one today. He will be missed."

Goldman died at his home on Sunday night surrounded by family and friends.

His death is not thought to be related to the coronavirus.

Goldman's acting credits date back to 1963 with an appearance in General Hospital, but his biggest role came in 1981 when he landed the voice of Brainy Smurf in cartoon series the Smurfs.

Brainy was a regular on the show and instantly identifiable to fans thanks to his trademark glasses.

The Smurf's stopped recording new episodes in 1989 but continued to air on the Cartoon Network and the Boomerang channel.

Goldman also appeared in M*A*S*H, Columbo and Criminal Minds and as the inquisitive medical student in 1974's Young Frankenstein alongside Gene Wilder.

For nearly 30 years Goldman continued to work in Hollywood as a prominent casting director.
