Danny Drinkwater: Chelsea and former Cardiff City star charged with drink driving after crash

Former Cardiff City midfielder Danny Drinkwater has been charged with drink-driving, police have confirmed.

The Chelsea star, who won the Premier League with Leicester City, was involved in a collision near his Cheshire home before being detained by police officers on Monday evening.

Nobody was hurt in the incident, which happened when Drinkwater was travelling after attending a charity event.

In a statement, Cheshire Police said: “A 29-year-old from Nether Alderley has been charged with drink driving following an incident in Cheshire.

“Danny Drinkwater, of Bollington Lane, was arrested shortly after 12.30am on Monday 8 April following a one-vehicle collision on Ashley Road in Mere.

“He has been released on unconditional bail and is set to appear at Stockport Magistrates' Court on Monday 13 May.”

A Chelsea statement said: "We are aware of reports but we will want to establish all of the facts before commenting."

Drinkwater spent time on loan with the Bluebirds in 2010/11 from Manchester United, before loan spells with Watford and Barnsley landed him a move to Leicester. He's struggled for game time since a £35million move to Chelsea in summer 2017.
