Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater has been charged with drink driving, police have said.

Drinkwater, 29, will appear in court next month accused of drink driving after allegedly crashing his Range Rover in Cheshire early on Monday.

Cheshire Police said in a statement: "A 29-year-old from Nether Alderley has been charged with drink driving following an incident in Cheshire.

"Danny Drinkwater was arrested shortly after 12.30am on Monday, April 8 following a one-vehicle collision on Ashley Road in Mere.

"He has been released on unconditional bail and is set to appear at Stockport Magistrates’ Court on Monday, May 13."

The Sun reported he was with 33-year-old lawyer Beth Mantel at the time of the collision.

Drinkwater has only played once for Chelsea this season, a glorified friendly against Manchester City in August’s Community Shield.

The midfielder was one of Leicester City’s star players during the club’s astonishing Premier League-winning campaign in the 2015/16 season.

But his form has been in decline ever since, and he has only made 23 appearances since his £35 million move to Chelsea in 2017.
