Danny Cowley verdict on Sunderland amid next manager speculation

Sunderland managerial candidate Danny Cowley has revealed his interest in the vacant post at the Stadium of Light.

Cowley is among the favourites with the bookmakers to replace Phil Parkinson, after he was sacked on Sunday night.

The former Lincoln and Huddersfield manager is currently out of work after leaving the Terriers, but told the Southend Echo that he is an admirer of Sunderland.

And Cowley, who works with his brother Nicky, has been missing the day-to-day involvement at a football club

“Sure. Sunderland are a huge football club with a wonderful history," he said when asked if he would be interested in the Sunderland job.

"For whatever reason they find themselves in League One but we will just have to wait and see.”

“We love football and of course we miss football.

“We’re some enjoying some time off and it’s been a really good opportunity for us to go away and study.

“We’re continuing to try and improve and we’re working on our pro licence at the moment.

“We’re trying to make the most of this time.”

Gust Poyet and Paul Cook lead the bookmakers' odds, with Cowley as third favourite with most bookies.
