Danny Baker sacked by BBC after 'racist' tweet about royal baby - and he's heading to Nottingham this weekend

Danny Baker, who will be bringing his latest tour to Nottingham this weekend, has been fired from BBC Radio 5 Live over a 'racist' royal baby tweet.

The radio host had tweeted then deleted an image which many said compared Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor to a chimpanzee.

"Just got fired from @bbc5live," the 62-year-old Cradle To Grave writer tweeted this morning (Thursday, May 9).

He then added: "Would have used same stupid pic for any other Royal birth or Boris Johnson kid or even one of my own. It's a funny image. (Though not of course in that context.) Enormous mistake, for sure. Grotesque. Anyway, here's to ya Archie, Sorry mate."

It was yesterday morning that Baker caused controversy by posting a photo of a monkey dressed in human clothes saying: "Royal baby leaves hospital."

Danny Baker sparked outrage after he uploaded this image of a couple holding hands with a monkey wearing a suit (Twitter)

It caused outrage from many who accused him of being 'racist' because of Meghan's heritage.

After removing the picture Baker wrote: 'Sorry my gag pic of the little fella in the posh outfit has whipped some up.  Never occurred to me because, well, mind not diseased.

'Soon as those good enough to point out it's possible connotations got in touch, down it came. And that's it."

He has since called his sacking "a masterclass of pompous faux-gravity."

He tweeted: "The call to fire me from @bbc5live was a masterclass of pompous faux-gravity. Took a tone that said I actually meant that ridiculous tweet and the BBC must uphold blah blah blah. Literally threw me under the bus. Could hear the suits knees knocking."

Baker will be telling stories from his life and career at the Theatre Royal this Sunday, May 12 as part of his Good Time Charlie's Back UK tour.

Jonathan Saville, interim venue director at the Theatre Royal and Royal Concert Hall, confirmed that the show "will go ahead as planned."

Tickets are still available priced at £22.50 from the venue, 0115 989 5555, trch.co.uk.

The Millwall fan spoke to Nottinghamshire Live recently about the show and recalled visits to the City Ground when Reds fans threw rocks at away fans.
