Dann, Sakho, Tomkins: The latest Crystal Palace injury news ahead of Aston Villa clash

Crystal Palace could be without as many as three defenders for the game against Aston Villa this afternoon (Saturday).

The Eagles welcome Villa to Selhurst Park for their latest Premier League fixture, with Palace looking to build on their 2-1 win against Manchester United last weekend at Old Trafford.

But Roy Hodgson could be without some key players for the game against Dean Smith's men, with all the injury problems in defence.

Below, we take a look at the players who could miss out, and when they could potentially return for Palace.

Scott Dann

The former Blackburn Rovers and Birmingham City defender played in midweek in the Carabao Cup tie against Colchester United, but sustained a hand injury late on in the game.

As a result of that, he has been wearing a cast since, and Roy Hodgson said at his pre-match press conference that a late decision would be made over whether or not the 32-year-old would be available for the game.

"Scott Dann had his hand trampled on on Tuesday so has a cast on, we will decide in the morning whether or not he is fit enough to play," Hodgson said.

If he fails to make the game, it is expected that he will return after the international break.

Mamadou Sakho

The Frenchman has not yet featured for Palace this season as he continues his recovery from surgery on his knee earlier this year.

The former Liverpool man has been out of action since February, when he was substituted in the Eagles' 4-1 win against Leicester City with the knee injury.

He subsequently had an operation on his knee, and missed the rest of last season.

Sakho did feature for Palace in pre-season as he looked to build up his fitness, but he has not yet played 90 minutes this summer.

And although he has been pictured in training this week, he is still likely to be short of match fitness.

However, Roy Hodgson has said he will be available against Villa, if required.

"He is in the squad tomorrow and we will see tomorrow," Hodgson said yesterday (Friday) at his pre-match press conference.

If he isn't involved against Villa, he is expected to return after the international break.

James Tomkins

The former West Ham defender has been sidelined since April with a groin injury sustained in the win at Newcastle United.

He had an operation in April and missed the rest of the season as a result, but he has not yet featured for the Eagles in pre-season.

But Hodgson says he is closing in on a return to action, with the 30-year-old expected to be back in training over the next few weeks.

"James Tomkins is on the brink of recovery, but isn’t training with the team fully," said the Palace boss.
