Danish royals have Megxit moment after children lose titles

Danish royals Prince Joachim, 53, and Princess Marie, 47, are moving to America six months after the children were stripped of their titles.

The move parallels Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s move the US in 2020 after their decision to step back as senior members of the British royal family rocked the monarchy.

Joachim is sixth in line to the throne and will move to become a defence attaché at the Danish embassy in Washington DC.

Prince Joachim said: “I am proud that I still get the opportunity to represent Denmark internationally in the area of security and defence. Transatlantic cooperation is a high-priority area, and I am honoured that they have found me qualified for the task.”

He will remain in the position for three months and previously held the same role while in Paris.

Last September, Queen Margrethe II, 82, stunned the royal family when she stripped four of her grandchildren of their titles.

In a statement she said she wanted the descendants to “shape their own lives” although the four will maintain their place in succession.

Joachim later told Danish news outlet Ekstra Bladet that he was “saddened” by the decision, adding: “It’s never fun to see your children being harmed. They have been put in a situation they do not understand.”

The Queen later apologised, saying: “I have made my decision as queen, mother and grandmother, but, as a mother and grandmother, I have underestimated the extent to which my younger son and his family feel affected.

“That makes a big impression, and for that I am sorry. No one should be in doubt that my children, daughters-in-law and grandchildren are my great joy and pride.

“I now hope that we as a family can find the peace to find our way through this situation.”

The Queen’s four other grandchildren, born to Crown Prince Frederik, 54, retained their titles.
