Danish couple told Liverpool garden tribute means they're 'already Scousers'

A Danish couple have created a little Liverpool in their garden after falling in love with the city.

Leif and Jette Frederiksen, from Nykøbing Falster in Denmark, have become a hit on social media after sharing images of their tribute to Liverpool.

The couple, both aged 69, have visited Liverpool multiple times and fall in love with the city more each time they visit.

Leif told the ECHO he first wanted to visit Liverpool because of his love of The Beatles, and his first visit kick-started a family tradition.

After visiting, the couple set up a little version of Liverpool in their back garden with street signs and guitars, so they could be reminded of their favourite British city.

Leif said: "When I turned 60, I didn't want to have a party so I invited my children and grandchildren to Liverpool.

"In the sixties I was very fascinated with The Beatles. I've always been a musician myself and my dream was to go to Liverpool to show my children where they grew up.

"We went there in 2012 and only two months later my wife and I went back again.

"We have been everywhere, we've been there every year since. We've been eight times now.

"We love it all so much and we're still going to go there every year. We really love the town, we feel like it's our home. It's a very nice city, we love to walk around and the Scousers are the most kind people you could meet."

The family visit the Cavern Club on Mathew Street and drive around all the famous streets when visiting.

In tribute to their special holidays, Leif created a garden featuring nods to some of those streets.

He said: "We got the idea because we missed Liverpool so much. When I'm walking around the garden and I see it, I'm reminded of Liverpool.

"Everywhere I go around here I'll always think of Liverpool."

After sharing images of their garden on a Facebook group, the post attracted hundreds of comments.

Leif said: "There was 2,200 likes and 350 comments and it was only from people who were very happy.

"They made me really happy, it was really hearty greetings. Someone told me 'you are already a Scouser'.

"It made me really happy in my heart."

Leif said the family have not been able to visit Merseyside for a while because of recent lockdown restrictions, but they are hoping to return when it is safe for more trips.

He said he hopes to buy more items to fill his garden with when he arrives.
