Danilho Doekhi in Rangers transfer link as persistent centre back rumours align with Gary McAllister's tactical riddle

Rangers are interested in Vitesse Arnhem defender Danilho Doekhi, according to a report in the Netherlands.

Regional Dutch paper De Gelderlander claim Steven Gerrard's champions are interested in adding the young centre-back to their ranks this summer.

Doekhi, 22, rose through the ranks at Excelsior before impressing the scouts at Ajax's world-renowned academy and playing in their B team.

He signed a four year deal at Vitesse in 2018 and has featured prominently this season, with boss Thomas Letsch describing him as one of the best defenders in the Eredivisie after his efforts saw them claim a 0-0 draw at Feyenoord to stay ahead of the Rotterdam side in the table.

The report also claims current English Premier League sides are interested with Fulham and Newcastle United named.

It's interesting that Gerrard and sporting director Ross Wilson appear keen to continue strengthening at centre-back, if the report is accurate. And it's not the first time a foreign report has claimed they're interested in an overseas player in the position.

Swedish outlet Aftonbladet reported last month that Filip Helander was attracting the likes of Leicester City and Aston Villa and suggested Rangers are looking at Elfborg's Joseph Okumu as a replacement.

Jack Simpson is only just in the door from Bournemouth after his summer pre-contract was expedited to January, while Leon Balogun has just signed a contract extension to keep him at Ibrox for a further season.

Connor Goldson and Helander seem to be the Premiership winners' best pairing, and then there are George Edmundson and Nikola Katic, two players who for very different reasons have barely kicked a ball in the title run.

Six centre-backs for a side that play with only two and have conceded just 12 league goals with three games remaining seems overkill enough, never mind signing a seventh, and so any addition to the heart of defence will likely be a replacement for one or even two of the above names. Too many cooks, as they say.

But it's also possible that the stockpiling could be in preparation for a tactical switch which assistant Gary McAllister hinted at last week while speaking about Nathan Patterson and James Tavernier.

He said: "As a club we're uber-delighted to have two outstanding players in that area of the pitch.

"There's different formations, you never know, we might be able to get the two of them on the pitch at the same time."

Could one of those formations include three central defenders, rather than just shifting the captain to right centre-back? It would be a bold evolution in Gerrard's style of play.

But the manager is insistent in reminding fans that he never stops looking for ways to improve a winning team.

Perhaps Sunday's shock cup exit to St Johnstone will serve as a pointed reminder that his side are not yet an all-conquering force in Scotland - and that an even stronger back-line is required to get to that point.
