Daniela Vega, 'A Fantastic Woman' star, becomes first openly transgender Oscars presenter

Daniela Vega made history at the Oscars Sunday night.

The 28-year-old Chilean actress, who made waves in last year's "A Fantastic Woman," became the first openly transgender presenter at the Oscars when she introduced Sufjan Stevens and St. Vincent, performing "Mystery of Love" from "Call Me By Your Name," Sunday night.

Vega, a trained opera singer, began transitioning at 17 years old at home in Chile.

"The political and social situation isn't that much different in Chile than it is (in the U.S.), in that there is a weird feeling when it comes to transgender people in general," she previously told the Los Angeles Times.

"But we have a lot to contribute in the sciences, arts and every single discipline. We're fighting for liberty, to be heard. I see the world is trying to change fast, but in some areas, that change is being blocked."

"A Fantastic Woman," about a transgender woman whose boyfriend dies suddenly, won for best foreign language film.
