Daniel Sturridge's role with Liverpool this season highlights attitude of model professional

On the opening day of the season Daniel Sturridge stepped off the bench to score almost instantly as Liverpool beat West Ham 4-0.

The striker had just returned from a unsuccessful loan spell at West Brom as they were relegated from the Premier League.

That goal though seemed to recharge Reds' fans belief in the No.15 as an important squad player going forward.

The Englishman then added his second goal of the season a month later as Liverpool came from behind to snatch a point against this weekend's opponents Chelsea.

His superb strike at Stamford Bridge, which curled out of Kepa Arrizabalaga's reach, not only rescued a draw but it gave Jurgen Klopp's side momentum.

Chelsea stars fire warning to Liverpool as Maurizio Sarri's men plan to crash party again

At that point in the season both Liverpool and Maurizio Sarri's team were unbeaten and a win would have handed them an advantage, while prematurely denting Liverpool's title charge.

Since then Sturridge has registered just one assist and has spent more time on the bench than any other player in the league.

According to betting company bwin, the 29-year-old has spent the equivalent of 1 day, 15 hours and 13 minutes as a substitute.

This highlights how a player with an unfortunate injury record has not only been able to maintain his fitness, but how accepting and content Sturridge has been with his role as a reserve.

Chelsea will visit Anfield on Sunday in what is a crucial Premier League clash.

The last time the Blues played a Liverpool side locked in a title race in 2013/14, Sturridge had played a starring role to put the Reds in that position.

And although the Birmingham-native isn't leading the line this time around, supporters shouldn't rule out his match-winning potential.
