Daniel Stendel working without pay as Hearts bid to ride out coronavirus uncertainty

Daniel Stendel has offered to work for free as Hearts aim to ride out the financial uncertainty brought about by the coronavirus outbreak.

Club owner Ann Budge reported earlier this week that they could stand to lose around £1million due to their lack of league and cup fixtures, and then on Wednesday evening it emerged that all staff had been asked to take a 50 per cent wage cut. Academy staff who work 20 hours or less have been asked to take unpaid leave.

It has now been reported by the Daily Record that manager Stendel offered to work for free to help the club avoid further financial difficulty, and the proposal was graciously accepted by club bosses.

On Wednesday Budge spoke about their need to "weather the storm" during these "unprecedented and challenging times" as they were facing up to life with games suspended and no cash generated through matches or non-matchday business streams.

In a club statement she said: "This reduction in income is not sustainable without taking immediate action to cut staff costs and overheads. As such, I need to act swiftly and take steps now to ensure that we, as a club, can weather this storm while trying to ensure we are ready to resume operations as and when we move into calmer waters and football restarts."
