Daniel Stendel hails Hearts defence after securing Scottish semi-final spot with victory over Rangers

Hearts manager Daniel Stendel heaped praise on his side's defence after they secured their place in the Scottish Cup semi-finals with a 1-0 victory over Rangers .

It was an action packed game at Tynecastle, which saw Hearts have several penalty claims denied in an action packed encounter in the capital.

Oliver Bozanic's second-half strike was the difference, with the Australian's close range shot firing Hearts into the last four.

But it was the Jambos backline which received the biggest praise from Stendel , after they limited Steven Gerrard's side to just one shot on target over the 90 minutes.

The Edinburgh outfit have already beaten the Ibrox outfit this year, securing a 2-1 win at Tynecastle last month in the Premiership.

But the Hearts boss reckons that win was trumped by today's performance, commending his side's solid defensive work.

He said: "I think this victory was more deserved than in the league.

"We played very well in the defence. We had more chances than them and we are all happy and I hope we can do it again in the league also.

"At the start we had a few problems, they played out from the goalie sometimes too easily, but we improved and we won the duels and we had the chances to win."

Stendel will be hoping he can now overturn Hearts' poor league form, which still sees them rooted to the bottom of the Premiership.

They may have to do it without John Souttar however, who was forced off with what looked like an Achilles injury early in the first half.

He added: "At first we are happy today though and especially after last time I felt our defence was a really good performance from all but especially from our defender and our goalie and (Clevid) Dikamona who came in from an early injury from John Souttar.

"It was not easy for him but it was the key to win this game today."
