Daniel Stendel becomes Hearts boss as he signs two-and-a-half-year deal at Tynecastle

Hearts have confirmed the appointment of Daniel Stendel as their new manager.

The former Barnsley boss has agreed a two-and-a-half-year deal to replace Craig Levein 37 days after his sacking.

Stendel takes the job after the Jambos settled a compensation wrangle with his former club.

The Tykes sacked the 45-year-old in October but, as Hearts pushed on with negotiations, club chief Paul Conway insisted they were due renumeration.

Talks with Stendel himself reached a breakthrough last weekend and the matter with Barnsley was all that stood in the way of a deal being concluded.

But his move to Edinburgh has now been rubberstamped and he will lead Hearts' quest to drag themselves up the Premiership table.

Stendel will assume managerial duties from interim gaffer Austin MacPhee and bring his former Tykes assistant Dale Tonge plus ex-first team coach Chris Stern with him to Tynecastle.

Hearts chief Ann Budge was prepared to push the boat out to land her top target and it was reported Stendel's predecessor Levein played a role in pitching the club to him.
