Daniel Ricciardo will start Sunday's Qatar Grand Prix 14th after a difficult qualifying session.

The Australian struggled throughout the session, never really threatening the top 10.

Ricciardo was never faster than 11th in any of the three practice sessions, with that pace carrying through to qualifying.

He was not the only big name knocked out in the second qualifying on Saturday, with Red Bull's Sergio Perez and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc also failing to make the top 10.

Ricciardo's teammate Lando Norris pulled out a terrific lap in the third qualifying session, putting his McLaren sixth on the grid.

Lewis Hamilton will start Sunday's race on pole after a blistering lap, with his championship rival Max Verstappen starting alongside him on the front row.

Hamilton was almost half a second quicker than Verstappen, with his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas third.

It is the first pole position for the Briton since Hungary in August and the 102nd of his career.

"That last lap was beautiful. It was a really sweet lap," he said.

"I was here until midnight last night working with the engineers … and found a lot of areas which I could improve."

Hamilton goes into the race 14 points behind Verstappen in the driver's championship.
