Daniel Ricciardo disappointed over Formula One Australian Grand Prix cancellation

Daniel Ricciardo has expressed his "heartbreak" following the cancellation of the 2021 Australian Formula One Grand Prix

The event, which was scheduled for November, had been in doubt for some time with the fluctuating nature of COVID-19 in Melbourne.

Ricciardo, who last weekend finished seventh at the Austrian Grand Prix, said he's "gutted" over the Victorian government's decision to abandon the race for a second consecutive year.

"Hey everyone, I normally smile but it's hard," he said.

"Obviously I'm really gutted we're not coming back home to Australia this year.

"I know everyone enjoys the Australian Grand Prix and coming to Melbourne.

"It hurts we haven't been there now for two years. We've got to look forward and hope that 2022 works out and we can get home.

"I think the main thing is that everyone keeps their chin up, hopefully everyone stays well and stays healthy.

"It's heartbreaking but hopefully we can see you all soon."

Formula One teams echoed Ricciardo's sentiments on social media.

"You’ll be missed Melbourne, but we’ll see you before you know it," McLaren posted.

Mercedes shared some of their fondest memories in Melbourne as they expressed their disappointment.

"Gutted that we won't be heading to Australia this season, but we can't wait to be back soon to make more memories like these," Mercedes posted on their social media.

Formula One is set to continue next weekend with the British Grand Prix.
