Daniel Levy tipped for Jose Mourinho sack u-turn after Tottenham lose at Dinamo Zagreb

Tottenham Hotspur's season could boil down to winning next month's Carabao Cup final against Manchester City.

The Lilywhites are still in with a shout of claiming a top-four spot in the Premier League table which would mean qualification for next season's Champions League group phase.

But Jose Mourinho's side will not be returning to European football's top table via winning the Europa League after crashing out at the last-16 stage at the hands of the much unfancied Dinamo Zagreb on Thursday.

Tottenham did appear to have one foot in the quarter-finals after taking care of business last Thursday night as a Harry Kane brace saw them breeze past the Croatian side ahead of the second leg.

However, they let a 2-0 lead slip as Mislav Orsic's hat-trick completed a stunning turnaround to dump Spurs out of the competition.

As a result, Mourinho's job could be hanging by a thread.

Bookmakers Betfair have revealed that the Spurs boss was 4/1 to be sacked before their defeat to Dinamo Zagreb and following their shocking 3-0 loss on the night, his odds have been slashed to 13/10.

Betfair Spokesperson, Sam Rosbottom said: "Before tonight’s second leg match, Jose Mourinho was 4/1 to be the next Premier League manager to leave their post, but following their embarrassing defeat we have already seen a large flurry of bets backing Mourinho for the exit and as a result we have slashed his odds to 13/10, making him the new favourite to go next.

"Take nothing away from the Croatian side, not many people saw them overturning a 2-0 deficit on aggregate and they were backed at 54/1 to qualify before kick-off, while Spurs were backed into 1/99 to make the draw for the next round before a disastrous night."

With that said, ESPN have recently claimed Mourinho's future will only be decided at the end of the season.

The report claims chairman Daniel Levy plans to hold off until May before determining his fate, so sacking the Portuguese tactician any time soon would represent a major u-turn from the Spurs chief.

It adds that the exorbitant cost Tottenham would have to pay to sack Mourinho, along with their Carabao Cup final appearance in April, has given the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss more time to keep his job.

Furthermore, The Daily Mail reported last month that the cost of axing him would prove prohibitive - and ESPN believes the figure would be around £30m.

His deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium runs out in the summer of 2023, with no break clause included.
