Daniel Levy sends message to Tottenham fans amid Harry Kane interest from Manchester United

Daniel Levy has told Tottenham supporters that every decision he makes is in the long-term interests of the club - amid growing speculation over Harry Kane's future.

Manchester United and other suitors were put on red alert 48 hours ago when news that Kane wants to leave during the summer transfer window resurfaced.

The 27-year-old sits joint-top of the Premier League goalscoring charts once again this season.

However, after scoring a staggering total of 165 goals in 243 top-flight games, the England captain is gearing up for a move elsewhere - even if Tottenham remain tight-lipped on the prospect.

Chelsea and United's neighbours Manchester City are also thought to be in the running, as Levy moves to address what the future holds in North London.

Writing in online programme notes ahead of tonight's Premier League clash with Aston Villa, the Tottenham chairman said: "This season, for many reasons, we have not met our raised expectations. Since we lost the Champions League final in June 2019, we have invested in excess of £250million in new players. Everyone had high hopes with the squad we had assembled. Unfortunately, despite sitting top of the Premier League in December, we have not been able to sustain this position.

"We are absolutely clear that central to our ambitions is a successful football team - it is what we all crave.

"We have come close over the last seven seasons and everyone's focus is on a return to regular Champions League participation and competing for honours. I have said it many times and I will say it again - everything we do is in the long-term interests of the club. I have always been, and will continue to be, ambitious for our club and its fans."

Inspired by Kane and Son Heung-min, Tottenham sat top of the Premier League standings before Christmas, but a turnaround in their fortunes ultimately saw them slip away from Champions League contention.

That led to former United manager Jose Mourinho losing his job, too, with Levy issuing another parting shot.

Also in his programme notes, Levy added: "We shall focus on the recruitment of a new head coach. We are acutely aware of the need to select someone whose values reflect those of our great club and return to playing football with the style for which we are known - free-flowing, attacking and entertaining - while continuing to embrace our desire to see young players flourish from our academy alongside experienced talent."
