Daniel Levy's managerial shortlist identifies heir to Mauricio Pochettino throne at Tottenham

Tottenham are searching for a new head coach after Jose Mourinho was dismissed last week, with Ryan Mason holding the fort in the meantime until the end of the current campaign.

Daniel Levy has a tough task on his hands to ensure that his next managerial appointment is successful, and he must apply the key lessons learnt from Mourinho's downfall in his search.

There are a number of reasons behind why the Portuguese failed to deliver at White Hart Lane, with the basics attached to his preferred brand of football being amongst the biggest concerns.

With and without possession, Spurs behaved in a manner that was reactive, secondary and distant from what Mauricio Pochettino established beforehand.

In attack this season, Spurs rank 13th for shots per match behind the likes of Fulham, Wolves and Brighton and on the defensive side of the game, they place 13th once more for final third pressures, which captures the team's tendency to retreat rather than pressing high up the field.

For perspective, Liverpool rank second and top by the same numbers, and Manchester City rank top and fourth.

Levy will have to consider a variety of different aspects as he searches for Mourinho's replacement, but simply identifying a coach who can get his team generating plenty of shots while pressing frequently in the attacking third would help a great deal towards establishing a governing game.

Football.London understands that the club's managerial shortlist consists of Brendan Rodgers, Graham Potter, Max Allegri, Eric ten Hag and Julian Nagelsmann, until the German made the move to Bayern Munich instead, but how do those compare based on the above criteria?

In the offensive department, ten Hag places top; his Ajax team are averaging 20.1 shots per match in the Dutch Eredivisie this season, although it is worth noting that the historic European club are expected to dominate their domestic opponents virtually every week because of the strength of the division.

Allegri - based on his final Serie A campaign in 2018/19 - and Nagelsmann follow next, with the two averaging between 15 and 16 shots per match at their respective clubs, Juventus and RB Leipzig.

Potter is averaging 12.6 with Brighton, while Rodgers - somewhat surprisingly - is posting the fewest with only 12 per match at Leicester City.

When it comes to pressing, pressure data isn't publicly available for the Dutch Eredivisie but it is reasonable to suggest that Ajax are very active without the ball given the philosophical beliefs held by the legendary club.

From the other selection of coaches, Nagelsmann ranks top with Leipzig showcasing 42.3 final third pressures per match, with that figure placing the Bundesliga outfit fourth in Europe's top five leagues this season behind only Bayern Munich, Wolfsburg and Liverpool.

Allegri's Juventus then follow on 37.8 pressures per match, followed by Potter's average of 32.4 and the 28.5 posted by Rodgers, who again places bottom.

The team differences have to be considered given the diverse player quality at Juventus, Leipzig, Brighton, Leicester and Ajax, but the numbers are interesting nonetheless.

Ten Hag certainly ticks the shooting and the pressing boxes, and Potter deserves credit for transforming Brighton's game given the team's approach under Chris Hughton beforehand.

Allegri and Rodgers - on the other hand - seem to offer a more adaptable style of play according to their players and the match scenario at hand; if the circumstances do not favour offensive and proactive football, they appear more inclined to adjust while still retaining set principles.

It remains to be seen who Levy will target, but his shortlist looks encouraging if he's to restore some of the basic fundamentals attached to Pochettino's methods after cutting ties with Mourinho.
