Daniel Levy’s Fonseca mistake could cost Tottenham as Newcastle make major Steve Bruce decision

With the current managerial situation at Newcastle United, Tottenham will be looking to the north east knowing they have endured a very similar situation to the Magpies.

Whilst not having enjoyed the benefits of a £300million takeover, there have been numerous questions directed at Spurs for their handling of their own managerial change this summer.

It took some time for current chairman Daniel Levy to decide on the eventual successor to Jose Mourinho, with Antonio Conte and Genarro Gatusso being linked before the role was finally offered to Nuno Espirito Santo.

Another name who was seemingly in the frame to take the reins at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was ex-Roma boss Paulo Fonseca.

For a long time, it appeared that the Portuguese would become the new Spurs head coach, only for a deal to fall through.

The 48-year-old has since revealed though that the club pulled out following the arrival of Fabio Paratici.

Talking to The Telegraph, he said: "The agreement was done. We were planning the pre-season and Tottenham wanted an offensive coach. It wasn't announced but we planned pre-season players.

"But things changed when the new managing director arrived and we didn't agree with some ideas and he preferred another coach.”

Fonseca could well arrive in the Premier League sooner rather than later, however, with Sky Sports reporting that he could be a contender for the Newcastle United job, with Steve Bruce expected to part company with the club.

Whether Spurs go on to rue their decision not to appoint Fonseca remains to be seen, with Nuno Espirito Santo's start to life at the club one of inconsistency in results and performances.

After winning his first three Premier League games, the club then went on to lose their following three and relinquished their lofty position at the top of the table.

To Espirito Santo’s credit, he has managed to get the team back on track with back-to-back wins over Aston Villa and Newcastle.

That is not to say Fonseca would not have performed at least as well as his Portuguese compatriot but should he be appointed at Newcastle, it will certainly be interesting to see whether Spurs have made the correct decision or not.
